Common Questions

Here are a few of the questions we get asked most often. If you can’t find your answer here, please feel free to contact us. We would be happy to clear up any confusion or address any concerns.

What sizes of picture frames do you have?
Currently, we can make 4×6 and 5×7 sized picture frames. If we have large enough pieces, we can also make 4×6 frames to hold up to 4 pictures or 5×7 frames that can hold 2 pictures. Several people have expressed interest in 8×10 frames. We do carry that size and ask that you contact us due to the shipping being a little more difficult.

Are there glass inserts in the picture frames?
The picture frames do not have glass inserts in them. Because we are using salvaged roofing shingles, the slate pieces are not thick enough to allow for glass inserts. Instead, we use a thin clear plastic insert to help protect your pictures.

Can you make other combinations or sizes of switchplates than what is shown?
We can do any kind of custom switchplate work that you need. If you need a specific size, a combination of switches that you just can’t find, or covers for an older type of switch that they just don’t make anymore let us know and we would be glad to help.

Are the products durable?
Most people are surprised by the durability of our products. Because of the layered nature of slate, it is not brittle like a ceramic tile would be. Where ceramic tiles could shatter and break apart if dropped, slate would be more likely to just chip or flake away a little.

What colors and shades of slate are available?
You can view the shop page to get an idea of the kinds of colors and shades of slate that we have available. There are other more colorful and exotic colors of slate out there, but most of this is imported from other countries. A primary focus of our business is to re-use existing materials and local sources as much as possible. Even if we can’t match colors and shades exactly, we can pick something that would be able to compliment any existing slate that you may be using.

Are the products expensive to ship?
Being a type of metamorphic rock, slate is heavy. But, our products are generally all fairly thin and flat, so they pack down efficiently. Using the USPS flat-rate boxes works great for shipping because shipping is a set rate regardless of the weight. For products such as single frames, light switch covers, and coasters, the shipping charge will never be more than $11. Typically, if the order is large enough that we can’t fit it all in one box, we will waive the shipping charges.

Do you have a store where I can come see your products?
Our business is currently run out of a basement workshop. Check out our listing of craft shows that we will be attending for an opportunity to see our products first-hand.

Do you offer your products wholesale?
We only have a few locations that are carrying some select products, but we are always looking for more. If you own or know of a store or business that may be interested in carrying our products, please let us know.
